Bahá'í Beliefs About Christ

Baha'is accept the Sonship and Divinity of Christ and believe that the Gospels are Divinely inspired.  Baha'u'llah referred to Christ as the "Spirit of God", as the One Who "appeared out of the breath of the Holy Ghost", and extolled Him as the "Essence of the Spirit".  There are many wonderful passages in the Baha'i writings which bear eloquent witness to the exalted station of Jesus.

The Baha'i Faith views Divine Revelation as being progressive (see the discussion of Progressive Revelation), that is, each of the world's major religions was revealed by a a Great Teacher or Prophet, called a "Manifestation of God".  These Beings are perfect reflections of the attributes and the Will of God.  Baha'u'llah explains this Station as follows:

"Unto this subtle, this mysterious and etherial Being He hath assigned a twofold nature; the physical, pertaining to the world of matter, and the spiritual, which is born of the substance of God Himself.  He hath, moreover, conferred upon Him a double station.  The first station which is related to His innermost reality, representeth Him as One Whose voice is the voice of God Himself. ... The second station is the human station, exemplified by the following verse: 'I am but a man like you.' "

The Bible describes this mysterious paradox in many verses:

"He who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9); "I and the Father are one." (John 10:30)

"I am going to the Father, for My Father is greater than I." (John 14:28); "I can of Mine own self do nothing...not My own will, but the will of the Father which has sent Me." (John 5:30)

Baha'is consider themselves followers and believers in Christ, and also followers of the other Manifestations of God as well (Moses, Buddha, Muhammad, Krishna, to name a few).  We believe that Baha'u'llah is the Manifestation of God for this Day in which we are now living and that His teachings speak with the same Voice that is heard from the Gospels.  Baha'is are exhorted to be  "lovers of the Light", rather than "lovers of the lamp".

"Light is good in whatsoever lamp it is burning!  A rose is beautiful in whatsoever garden it may bloom!  A star has the same radiance if it shines from the East or from the West. Be free from prejudice, so will you love the Sun of Truth from whatsoever point in the horizon it may arise!  You will realize that if the Divine light of truth shown in Jesus Christ it also shown in Moses and in Buddha."

Abdu'l-Baha

“When Christ appeared in this world, it was like the vernal bounty; the outpouring descended; the effulgences of the Merciful encircled all things; the human world found new life.” - `Abdu'l-Bahá
